Since class war is all the rage now for Labour, I've compiled a list of (known) privately-educated Labour MPs. Some will be standing down, but those who aren't you should punish by voting for someone else - even if you support the Labour government, because that government seems to be saying David Cameron et al are unable to think for ordinary people, yet are quite at ease being in a party with a disproportionately high number of old public schoolboys themselves! Labour even have an old Etonian (Mark Fisher). Here's the list:
- Ed Balls (Morley and Outwood)
- Hugh Bayley (City of York)
- Hilary Benn (Leeds Central)
- Bob Blizzard (Waveney)
- Chris Bryant (Rhondda)
- Stephen Byers (North Tyneside)
- Charles Clarke (Norwich South)
- Ann Clwyd (Cynon Valley)
- Jim Cousins (Newcastle-upon-Tyne Central)
- Alistair Darling (Edinburgh South West)
- Quentin Davies (Grantham and Stamford)
- Louise Ellman (Liverpool Riverside)
- Natascha Engel (North East Derbyshire)
- Mark Fisher (Stoke-on-Trent Central)
- Barry Gardiner (Brent North)
- Linda Gilroy (Plymouth Sutton)
- Paul Goggins (Wythenshawe and Sale East)
- Peter Hain (Neath)
- Patrick Hall (Bedford and Kempston)
- Fabian Hamilton (Leeds North East)
- Harriet Harman (Camberwell and Peckham)
- John Healey (Wentworth)
- Margaret Hodge (Barking)
- Geoff Hoon (Ashfield)
- Lindsay Hoyle (Chorley)
- Tessa Jowell (Dulwich and West Norwood)
- Sally Keeble (Northampton North)
- Ruth Kelly (Bolton West)
- Jim Knight (South Dorset)
- Ivan Lewis (South Bury)
- Martin Linton (Battersea)
- Ian Lucas (Wrexham)
- Denis MacShane (Rotherham)
- Fiona Mactaggart (Slough)
- Judy Mallaber (Amber Valley)
- John Mann (Bassetlaw)
- Rob Marris (Wolverhampton South West)
- Gordon Marsden (Blackpool South)
- Bob Marshall-Andrews (Medway)
- Michael Meacher (Oldham West and Royton)
- Chris Mole (Ipswich)
- Julie Morgan (Cardiff North)
- Doug Naysmith (Bristol North West)
- Nick Palmer (Broxtowe)
- Gordon Prentice (Pendle)
- James Purnell (Stalybridge and Hyde)
- Nick Raynsford (Greenwich and Woolwich)
- Geoffrey Robinson (Coventry North West)
- Andrew Slaughter (Ealing, Acton and Shepherd's Bush)
- John Spellar (Warley)
- Phyllis Starkey (Milton Keynes South West)
- Howard Stoate (Dartford)
- Gavin Strang (Edinburgh East)
- Mark Todd (South Derbyshire)
- Kitty Ussher (Burnley)
- Keith Vaz (Leicester East)
- Malcolm Wicks (Croydon North)
- Michael Wills (Swindon North)
- Rosie Winterton (Doncaster Central)
- Shaun Woodward (St Helens South)
Does anybody else notice the high frequency of past and present Cabinet members, as well as government ministers? I hope that isn't an admission that a private education makes one more able to do a job.

Shhhh - you'll mess up the impact of Labour's 2010 Manifesto.
D
Hilary Benn! Hahahaha that really takes the cake.
I guess Tony Benn was on a sabbatical from the Revolution while his son went to Prep School.
[ Sidenote: This isn't unusual, Kim Philby's son went to my Prep School.....go figure! :) ]
Look at the number of Labour MPs who took PPE at Oxford.
Kelly, Smith, Balls, Cooper, Miliband E, Miliband D.
Who was teaching the course?
Mandy did PPE as well.
That bloke at the top, dungeekin, needs to calm down with the link whoring. Everywhere you go, there he is with a link to his blog.
Its not a bad blog, friend, but quit pushing it in our faces.
And, of course, Blair was the first public school chappie to make it to No. 10 since A. Douglas Home in 1964. The five intervening PMs - 2 Labour, 3 Tory - were all grammar.
Fantastic list. Have you let the sun have a look? Actually the Sun is a bit anti toff at the moment but the Mail will no doubt like to have a little look and a publish. I'm sure they would be interested.

David Lammy
Justin, my understanding was that he won a scholarship to a grant-maintained religious school, rather than private - is that not the case? Happy to amend.
McShane???
I need to have a lie down...
John Denham MP - his Website, and Wiki entries, both state that he went to Woodroffe Comprehensive School. It is indeed a Comp now but when he went it was a Grammar, and he had to pass the 11+ to get there. Had he failed, he would have gone to the Secondary Modern school in Axminster, not the Woodroffe in Lyme Regis.
Just a small point, but indicative of the sort of half-truth so common in this area.
Pretty sure that Hillary Benn went to a Notting Hill comprehensive.
Perhaps you could publish the names of the schools they went to.
Benn went to a private primary school, as well the Westminster Under School, a prep school. He did indeed then go to the Holland Park School, aka the "socialist Eton" - a comp where left-wing millionaires sent (send?) their kids.
Wonderful Stuff.
Together we can finish off the Grammars and have no more threat to our privileged status.
Public School Lefty
What's more important, since their parents chose where they were educated is how many sent their children to public school.
I know Diane Abbott and Blair did - what's is the percentage of MP kids in private schools?
Not many since they are socialists ;-)
Out of interest
Haven't a clue, Anon. I would imagine many of them went to comps in rich catchment areas. I know Hattie Harman sent hers to a grammar school
Can I suggest a list of Cabinet Millionaires next?
"No question now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 10
Csn some wonderful investigstive journslist please please uncover the names of those Labour MPs who sent or send their own poor helpless children into private education? Wouldn't that be more telling?
Conand and Ben - - - -
I think you're on to something, but my recollection from all those years ago was that Benn Junior was sent to Holland Park Comprehensive (quite the smartest public-sector school in its day, don't you know).
While we're at it, what about Tony Benn having been Lord Stansgate before renouncing his title? Clearly he and his offspring are unfit to govern under the Brown (Class War) (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act of 2010.
What appalls me is that our public schools are churning out so many lefties. Perhaps it's a subtle plot to infiltrate and undermine the Labour Party?
You forgot John "I'm all right Jack" Whitaker Straw. Boarder at the £3.5k per term Brentwood School.
Apparently he uses the name "Jack" 'cos it's more working class
Benn - Holland Park.
While he was being taught there his wealthy parents bought him some extra private tuition
Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that every male member of the Benn family had gone to Westminster (like Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne). The granddaughter went to Holland Park.
Dont forget Bob Ainsworth - sorry just joking.
Labour are relying on what they hope is the utter stupidity, cynicism and prejudice of the electorate to forget about their brazen hypocrisy.
Working Class Tory - I commend you.
I was a life long working class
Tory untill I got a lettter from him saying he did'nt mind working
class idiots standing outside pubs
and clubs in the pissing rain just
because the low life smoked.
Soft spoken Trot, does'nt kid me or
any other ex Tories in the northern
marginals.Sounds like the chump
actually believes the "passive smoking"myth just how dim can a public school kiddy get.
